Clean and Research-Focused

Advancing Freshwater Science for a Sustainable Future

We conduct research that integrates hydrology, ecology, and climate adaptation to protect Uganda’s lakes, rivers, wetlands, and aquifers. Our work strengthens water security, ecosystem resilience, and community wellbeing.

About FRE-RG

Understanding and Restoring Uganda’s Freshwater Systems

Uganda’s freshwater ecosystems support millions of people through water supply, food production, hydropower, and biodiversity. Yet these systems face increasing pressure from land-use change, pollution, climate variability, and rapid population growth. FRE-RG responds to these challenges by generating scientific evidence that helps protect water resources and strengthen ecosystem resilience.

Our work integrates hydrology, ecology, and climate adaptation to understand how freshwater systems function and how they can be sustainably managed. Through field research, modelling, community partnerships, and training, we develop practical solutions that reduce flood risks, safeguard wetlands, enhance water security, and support climate-resilient livelihoods across Uganda.

Science, Communities and Innovation Working Together

We Take Action to Protect Uganda’s Lakes, Rivers and Wetlands

Uganda’s freshwater systems are under increasing pressure from land-use change, pollution, erosion, and climate variability. FRE-RG works at the intersection of research, community engagement, and policy to address these challenges using science-driven and nature-based solutions.

Our Research Focus

Core Freshwater Research Themes

We integrate hydrology, ecology and climate science to develop practical, evidence-based solutions for resilient freshwater systems.

01

Catchment Hydrology & Water Resources

We assess floods, groundwater, erosion, and water availability using field monitoring, modelling, and satellite-based analysis.

02

Aquatic Ecosystems & Biodiversity

We monitor rivers, lakes and wetlands using biological indicators to protect biodiversity and sustain ecosystem services.

03

Climate Change & Adaptation

We develop nature-based and community-led solutions that strengthen climate resilience, water security and sustainable land use.
