Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education and Research for Development (APPEAR)

The Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education and Research for Development (APPEAR) is a prestigious funding and collaboration initiative of the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC). APPEAR supports long-term academic partnerships between universities and research institutions in Austria and partner countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

APPEAR promotes:

  • High-quality research for sustainable development
  • Capacity building in higher education and scientific institutions
  • Joint curriculum development and innovation
  • South–North academic and scientific collaboration

As a collaborative supporter of the KI-WATER Project under the Freshwater Resources and Ecosystems Research Group (FRE-RG), APPEAR plays a critical role in strengthening research infrastructure, technical expertise, and academic exchange between Kabale University and international partners, including BOKU University.

Through APPEAR’s support, the KI-WATER Project advances:

  • Integrated Water Resources Management research and training
  • Evidence-based water governance and policy engagement
  • Open-access data generation and knowledge sharing
  • Community-centered and climate-resilient water solutions

This collaboration significantly enhances regional research capacity, educational quality, and the practical application of scientific knowledge for sustainable water management in the Kigezi Highlands and beyond.
